What does a geyser replacement actually cost in Cape Town?

We get asked for a number over the phone, and we understand why. But a geyser replacement is not one price, and any plumber who gives you a firm figure before seeing the installation is guessing — or leaving something out that will appear on the invoice later.

Here is what actually moves the price, so you can compare quotes properly instead of just picking the smallest number.

1. Cylinder size and type

A 100 litre cylinder and a 200 litre dual-element cylinder are different pieces of equipment at different prices. Size should be matched to the household, not to the cheapest option on the shelf — an undersized geyser that runs out of hot water every evening is a false economy you live with for the next twelve years.

2. Compliance work — the item most often left out

A legal geyser installation in South Africa must meet SANS 10254. That means a correctly sized drip tray, a proper overflow discharging to a visible point, vacuum breakers on hot and cold, a pressure-control valve and a functioning temperature-and-pressure safety valve.

On an older installation, several of those may be missing, undersized or simply never fitted. Bringing it up to standard is not an upsell — it is what makes the installation legal and the insurance claim valid. It is also, very often, the difference between two quotes that look wildly different.

3. Access

A cylinder sitting in an accessible roof space near a manhole is a straightforward job. One wedged into a tight Victorian roof with a narrow trapdoor, or installed inside a cupboard in a flat, takes longer and sometimes takes two people. Access is a real cost and we would rather show it to you on the quote than bury it.

4. What has to happen around the geyser

Sometimes the old cylinder is the only problem. Sometimes the electrical connection is not up to standard, or the pipework feeding it is corroded galvanised that will fail within the year. We will tell you which of those are genuinely necessary now, and which can honestly wait.

How we quote it

We look at the installation, tell you plainly whether it is a repair or a replacement, and give you a written quote before we start. Labour is billed in 30-minute windows. The old cylinder is removed and taken away. You get photographs and compliant paperwork for the insurer.

What we will not do is quote you a headline number over the phone and then find reasons to grow it once the ceiling is open.
